Joanna Dougherty (<\/span>BScEcon<\/span>\u00a02017)\u00a0<\/span>took part in our\u00a0<\/span>WoMentoring<\/span>\u00a0flash\u00a0<\/span>mentoring<\/span>\u00a0scheme<\/span>\u00a0–\u00a0<\/span>short-term mentoring for female graduates from successful alumnae. Our\u00a0<\/span>WoMentors<\/span>\u00a0provide guidance and support, helping to inspire and empower the next generation of Cardiff alumnae.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Joanna, Global Operations Director of Client Experience at JLL,\u00a0was mentored by\u00a0Dr\u00a0<\/span>Linda Wilding (BSc 1980, PhD 1985<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0who has had a distinguished career as\u00a0a Non-Executive\u00a0Director<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We spoke to Joanna about how\u00a0Linda\u2019s support\u00a0helped her take the next steps in her career<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and secure a huge promotion.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What made you apply for\u00a0the\u00a0WoMentoring\u00a0scheme?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I always try to sign up for initiatives like this, even if they seem a bit scary or out of my comfort zone, as you never know who you are going to meet. The opportunity to speak with a successful woman in business was something I couldn\u2019t pass up.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0did\u00a0the mentoring involve?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>My mentor and I met for the first time over Skype in March. The timing was fantastic as there had been some changes at my company and I was facing decisions about my career path as well as some internal interviews that I was preparing for. We had a few calls over the course of a couple of weeks, where she helped me to work through what I wanted from my role, both long term and short term. Being able to pick her brains and get advice at that time was so helpful and when I went for a promotion, I was offered the role during the interview<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0were the key\u00a0insights you gained\u00a0during\u00a0mentoring?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Probably too many to list! We\u2019ve covered so much in our catch ups, from tips for job interviews both where I was the interviewee and then when I became the interviewer. She also gave me advice on remaining calm during presentations and guidance on working effectively with people based in different countries, which has become very important for me recently as I moved into a global role<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you think mentoring has helped you?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I would say\u00a0mentoring has helped me\u00a0by providing me with\u00a0invaluable advice, improved confidence, and an expanded network. I also think it\u00a0will help me to become a good mentor in the future,\u00a0now\u00a0that I\u00a0know what \u2018good\u2019 looks like.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Would you recommend\u00a0flash mentoring to other\u00a0alumni?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Without a doubt. There are so many situations where some impartial advice from someone experienced can be incredibly valuable. It doesn\u2019t take up much of your time, so you really don\u2019t have anything to lose.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Have you kept in touch with your mentor?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Absolutely. We speak pretty much every month and even met for the first time in person a few weeks ago!
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

What would you say to\u00a0a Cardiff University\u00a0alum who was thinking of\u00a0signing up to be a mentor?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do it! Again,\u00a0it doesn\u2019t take up too much of your time, but speaking from experience,\u00a0you could\u00a0really\u00a0have a big impact on someone\u00a0in the early stages of\u00a0their\u00a0career.<\/span><\/p>\n
