Regular re-testing&nbsp;will also be offered.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"COVID-19 screening at Cardiff University\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IAPWBmQ1Ivc?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If&nbsp;any&nbsp;of Cardiff\u2019s asymptomatic&nbsp;test results come back&nbsp;positive,&nbsp;both&nbsp;the person and the NHS will be notified, so the latest NHS protocol, including&nbsp;Test and Trace, can begin.&nbsp;&nbsp;The&nbsp;person, and fellow housemates and\/or family,&nbsp;will&nbsp;be advised to&nbsp;follow current&nbsp;Public Health Wales&nbsp;guidelines such as&nbsp;self-isolation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cardiff University\u2019s&nbsp;service&nbsp;will provide highly valuable&nbsp;data&nbsp;about the spread&nbsp;and prevalence&nbsp;of COVID-19, as well as&nbsp;helping&nbsp;the University&nbsp;keep students, faculty and&nbsp;the&nbsp;wider&nbsp;Cardiff community safe.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Rob Davies (PhD 1991),&nbsp;the&nbsp;Registrar&nbsp;for Cardiff\u2019s&nbsp;College of&nbsp;Biomedical&nbsp;and&nbsp;Life Sciences,&nbsp;describes&nbsp;the University\u2019s&nbsp;approach:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/323\/2020\/09\/Rob-Davies-resize-small-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5248\" width=\"141\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/323\/2020\/09\/Rob-Davies-resize-small-1.jpg 333w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/323\/2020\/09\/Rob-Davies-resize-small-1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 141px) 100vw, 141px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Cardiff is pioneering a lab which will deliver coronavirus (COVID-19) tests &#8211; and retests &#8211; for over 20,000 asymptomatic students and staff on campus this autumn. We aim to find the disease even when it is asymptomatic, working\u202falongside national testing of symptomatic people. Our aims are to help protect both our\u202fcampus and local communities, and to learn more about COVID-19 transmission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Developing the lab has been a huge logistical and scientific challenge. We started in July, building on our partnership work with the NHS in the early days of the pandemic. We&#8217;ve created and staffed a highly automated lab, booking system, sample collection locations, and reporting systems. Final testing is now under way so we can offer testing and regular retesting to asymptomatic Cardiff students and staff on campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;With all these pieces coming together now, it feels as if we have accomplished so much already. There is much more to come in terms of understanding how COVID-19 moves amongst the community. It feels really special for Cardiff to be taking this pioneering step for our students, staff and city.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding how COVID-19 moves through university populations and their communities is of global importance.
