{"id":4042,"date":"2019-10-29T15:55:30","date_gmt":"2019-10-29T15:55:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/?p=4042"},"modified":"2023-03-22T13:02:16","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T13:02:16","slug":"5-acts-that-made-a-splash-at-swn-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/2019\/10\/29\/5-acts-that-made-a-splash-at-swn-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"5 acts that made a splash at S\u0175n 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>After another successful edition of Cardiff\u2019s annual music festival S\u0175n, we take a look at some of the Cardiff alumni who took part. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Papur Wal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Welsh language band features Ianto Gruffydd (BA 2017) on vocals and guitar, Gwion Ifor (BA 2018) on bass and Guto Huws (BA 2017, MA 2019) on drums. They\u2019re a guitar driven, indie-rock outfit who sing in both Welsh and English. Having released new music in August this young, up and coming band carve out a sound similar to Pavement and Mogwai. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-spotify wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: O\u2019n ni\u2019n Ffrindia\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/51Q4f3l56VdJStj9a0km4x?si=QcWHcaOSTQ-QVY3fDBbRGw&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ani Glass<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ani Glass (MSc 2019) is injecting new dynamism into the Welsh language music scene. Her mixture of dark, shiny Bladerunner-esque synths, coupled with her dreamy vocals makes for a unique listening experience, and one to watch for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-spotify wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Peirianwaith Perffaith\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2u0mRdDBnvpJNoViKEHW8j?si=4-Ee91gHS8-rLCFVRqbwDw&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bodyhacker <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cardiff trio Bodyhacker are a heavy, punky grunge outfit. You won\u2019t hear any guitars in Bodyhacker\u2019s music \u2013 it\u2019s all about the bass which is handled by Cardiff alum Josh Brimble (BA 2016). This makes for a gutsy, low end, stripped back aesthetic with fuzz and screaming vocals mixed in to fill out their uncompromising sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-spotify wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Sneks\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/7IhTcFmOpDKKWbqP0jpMxh?si=fuQrBwf8RLSaQdugyytbig&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gwilym <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A multiple award-winning band from North West Wales, Gwilym\u2019s trio of guitarists contains current student Llew Glyn (Politics and Philosophy 2017-). Their upbeat take on Welsh language pop-rock has seen them produce anthems such as \u2018Catalunya\u2019 which has become a staple in the Welsh language music scene<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-spotify wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Catalunya\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/1OKiJfPoYcfxy3V9YaKrZm?si=W6i060JDTh2J6-igxrFsRQ&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chroma <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katie Hall (BA 2017) brings presence and aura as the lead singer in CHROMA. Describing themselves as Garage-rock with math influences, the trio certainly know how to put on a show. Established in the Cardiff scene and festival circuit, the music speaks for itself.
