We asked Rhys what his
experience was like, and why he chose to get involved.

Why did you choose to become an Alumni Ambassador?

I studied for three years at Cardiff University and had a
great time – not only academically but also through volunteering and sport, and
they fed into one memorable experience at Cardiff.

So, for me, it’s the opportunity to give back to the
University, and it’s a good way to meet other alumni. You meet lots of
different and interesting people.

So, what was it like?

I was wearing the blue t-shirt with the Cardiff University
logo and, although I was in North Wales at the Eisteddfod, people were seeing
the t-shirt and starting conversations with me as if we knew each other as
friends because we had both gone to Cardiff University. I think that was the highlight of my time at
the Eisteddfod.

I like speaking with people and being an Alumni Ambassador
gives me the opportunity to hear a lot of different stories, from all sorts of
people. One of the most interesting conversations I had was with a teacher from
Cardiff University who had been teaching history since the 1960s – he had a lot
of interesting stories about the University and about how it had changed over
time.

What made you want to volunteer at the National
Eisteddfod?

The Eisteddfod is a celebration of Welsh culture. People
have asked me why I chose Cardiff University instead of going to England; I
think staying in Wales and celebrating the culture is part of the Welsh
identity.

I think it’s very important for alumni to join in at events
like this that will help raise the profile of the University.

What was your role at the Eisteddfod?

I was at the Cardiff University tent where they hold events and
talks. In the afternoon on Friday there was a special social event for alumni –
a great opportunity for me to help out! I worked with the University team to
set up and welcome people. It’s good to talk to others about their experiences
of the University and build new connections.

I think that one of the most important things that people can do is share their stories because that can inspire people who are thinking about going to University to choose Cardiff.

It’s one thing to see it in a prospectus, but it’s better to hear it from someone who actually went there.

Has Rhys’ experience inspired you? You can either share your own story or register your interest in getting involved.

Rhys Fletcher (BA 2015) volunteered to support Cardiff University at the National Eisteddfod in Llanrwst.
