The Cardiff Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (CUROP) allows Cardiff students to \u2018trial\u2019 research before committing to pursue a Masters, PhD or a career in academia. Via a summer placement, CUROP students are able to contribute to real research at Cardiff University, gaining valuable experience for further study or a career in academia.<\/p>\n

Support from Cardiff donors \u00a0ensures that financial circumstances aren\u2019t a barrier for students ; all placements are fully paid and funded by generous philanthropic support. Grant-funding of these placements is allowing more students to access this programme; over 500 \u00a0students have participated in the programme so far, since it was lauched in 2008. \u00a0Here are just a few of their stories.<\/p>\n

Mateusz Wielebinski (Geography (Human) 2016 -) worked on the excellently titled \u2018Everybody needs good neighbours\u2019 project, exploring neighbour relations through the planning system. He saw research as central to his career path and described the placement as \u201ca perfect place for me to test the waters\u201d. Not only did Mateusz think the placement helped with his future career choices, but it also helped his writing assignments and \u201cjust overall made me remember the entire experience at Cardiff University as something to cherish.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren Smith (Psychology 2015 -) participated in a project about how children with Autism Spectrum Disorder interact with Multi Sensory Environments. The project gave her vital skills and insight into pursuing a career as an Educational Psychologist. \u201cThe key learning experience for me was understanding how to code qualitative data\u201d said Lauren. \u201cThis is an element of research methods not covered to much extent on my course\u201d. As a result of her placement, and meeting her supervisor and a PhD student, she\u2019s looking for teaching roles to get the experience she needs to apply for a PhD.<\/p>\n

For Flory Dao (Thu) (Architecture 2017 -) felt that her project broadened her horizons. She worked on a review of the Community Gateway initiative, a partnership between Cardiff University and the local community: \u201cIt had a great impact on me. I had a taste of what community work is all about. As an architecture student, it made me realise that getting good grades is not all that matters \u2013 contributing to the neighbourhood around you can be as rewarding as getting a good grade.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cardiff donors are ensuring that these placements, which offer students the opportunity to test out their future careers in research in a safe, live environment, remain paid placements. That levels the playing field, removes one of the biggest obstacles to undertaking a research placement, all the whilst ensuring that Cardiff University continues to produce great researchers.<\/p>\n
