It has been a pleasure and an honour to be a part of a journey that started well before us, and is continuing with a mission and a vision that is enviable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The wide range of Cardiff\u2019s work is perhaps best illustrated by Lyndon Wood&#8217;s own support. The founder of insurance firm\u00a0Moorhouse\u00a0Group, Lyndon not only supports postdoctoral research with philanthropic giving but also provides internships to current Cardiff students.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Your\u00a0impact\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>First to talk about that work was Matthew Vince (MA 2014, Religious and Theological Studies 2015-), recipient of the Jameel Scholarship \u2013 facilitated by Mr Jameel, a prominent supporter of Cardiff\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/islamukcentre\/\">Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew&#8217;s research looks at the ways British Muslims integrate their faith with secular workplaces and cultures. Uncovering the everyday challenges in the lives of British Muslims is hard work, and costly \u2013 it \u201csimply wouldn\u2019t be possible without the Jameel Scholarship,\u201d said Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrating these world-class capabilities was Dr\u00a0Nichola\u00a0Brydges,\u00a0a Hodge Neuroscience Research Fellow at Cardiff&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/neuroscience-mental-health\">Neuroscience &amp; Mental Health Research Institute (NMHRI)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her work has already been successful in establishing the genetic basis and environmental factors behind mental illnesses. \u201cWe are at the very beginning,\u201d promised Dr Brydges \u2013 setting her sights on \u201cdiagnosis, treatments and prevention strategies\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>More than research<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In perhaps the most powerful moment of the day, Naomi Owen (Journalism, Media and Culture 2015-)\u00a0told attendees about\u00a0how\u00a0receiving the James Thomas Award\u00a0(created by the parents of the School\u2019s late academic)\u00a0has\u00a0supported and\u00a0enabled her studies.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Naomi Owen shares her story \u2013 Cardiff Day\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E6wgYJKzEiw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Naomi spoke of her underprivileged background and an environment in which higher education hadn\u2019t even been a consideration, powerfully illustrated by one anecdote: \u201cThere was a moment last Christmas when my mother walked through the door with parcels from the foodbank, and I thought: \u2018Who am I trying to kid, getting a university degree?\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, receipt of the Award changed her outlook \u2013 and with the encouragement of her tutors she is now unashamed of her background. \u201cBy being a working class writer with experiences to share, a positive cultural intervention is already underway,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Having being \u201cconsumed with dread that my life would never change,\u201d Naomi now intends to undertake a Masters\u2019 degree in Digital Media within the School \u2013 and said she would \u201cnever forget the kindness\u201d of Dr Thomas\u2019 mother, Barbara.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Thank you\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Director of Development and Alumni Relations TJ Rawlinson adeptly summarised the difference that donations of time and money can make to students, research and the University as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The stories that you&#8217;ve heard today can only be told because of you in this room. This is a very special group of people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The contribution of donors, fundraisers and volunteers was writ large, and the overarching message of the day was one of thanks \u2013 from recipients of awards meeting their benefactors one to one, to the Vice-Chancellor personally thanking attendees.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re inspired by any of the stories from Cardiff Day, you can find out more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/donate\/projects\">our fundraising priorities<\/a>.
