{"id":2515,"date":"2017-11-14T17:02:11","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T17:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/?p=2515"},"modified":"2023-03-22T12:40:29","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T12:40:29","slug":"my-cardiff-is-innovation-at-593-celsius","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/2017\/11\/14\/my-cardiff-is-innovation-at-593-celsius\/","title":{"rendered":"My Cardiff is\u2026 innovation at 593 Celsius"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\"> Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(PhD 2014<em>)\u00a0<\/em><\/span>Honorary Research Fellow and Deputy Assistant Commissioner, London Fire Brigade.<\/p>\n<p>For Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, life as a PhD student was pretty intense. \u201cI\u2019d be in the lab running experiments at 5am, then do a full shift in work, go home for dinner and, after putting my baby to bed, be back out at 7pm for a night shift at the University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though strenuous, such a hectic schedule will sound familiar to many doctoral students. Where Sabrina differed is that her day job involved commanding the Fire Brigade\u2019s response to structures burning at temperatures of almost 600 degrees Celsius.\u00a0 She joined the Fire Brigade aged just 18, and completed her undergraduate, masters and PhD degrees while a serving officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of years you\u2019re working on a PhD\u2026 the amount of time you spend with your supervisor can end up lasting longer than a lot of marriages,\u201d she jokes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuckily for me, my supervisor [Professor Rob Honey] gave me the best science training I could ever ask for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based in Cardiff\u2019s School of Psychology, Sabrina\u2019s research field was behavioural neuroscience. Her work was focused on the ways in which everyday environmental factors can influence the decision-making process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was through this research that I came up with the idea of fitting fire officers\u2019 helmets with GoPro cameras,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt gave helpful insight into firefighters\u2019 decision making and it\u2019s actually led to change in national policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now Deputy Assistant Commissioner with the London Fire Brigade, Sabrina has been implementing her academic findings as part of \u201clarge scale national collaboration between the fire brigade and Cardiff University\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The innovation has been lauded internationally, with Sabrina picking up an American Psychological Association award in Washington, D.C. this year. She dedicated this award to \u201call London firefighters who worked during the Grenfell Tower incident\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-hour days she put in as an academic on top of her day job \u2013 in stints of three weeks at a time \u2013 may have been strenuous, but she has the satisfaction of knowing her research has made, and continues to make, a real difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI firmly believe the result of the work I\u2019ve done with Cardiff University means we\u2019ve been able to make fire fighters safer.
