{"id":2177,"date":"2017-06-22T14:50:27","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T14:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/?p=2177"},"modified":"2022-04-13T16:14:24","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T16:14:24","slug":"sue-lloyd-roberts-scholarship-supports-young-cardiff-university-journalist-thanks-to-bbc-donation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/2017\/06\/22\/sue-lloyd-roberts-scholarship-supports-young-cardiff-university-journalist-thanks-to-bbc-donation\/","title":{"rendered":"Sue Lloyd Roberts Scholarship support young Cardiff University journalists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">The Sue Lloyd Roberts Scholarship \u2013 designed to support the training of young journalists at Cardiff University\u2019s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies \u2013 has received a \u00a350,000 donation from the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>The donation will make a substantial contribution to the scholarship fund launched by the friends and family of Sue Lloyd Roberts \u2013 the former BBC journalist &#8211; following her death in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>It will support the fees of one student per year to be trained at the UK\u2019s leading journalism school at Cardiff University. The gift matches another made by Google earlier in the academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Friends and family have been working with the University\u2019s Development and Alumni Relations department to continually grow the fund \u2013 which now boasts exactly 50 separate donors &#8211; and remains open to further support.<\/p>\n<p>Recipients of the scholarship have to demonstrate a commitment to the kinds of issues Sue Lloyd Roberts reported \u2013 including human rights, international affairs and the environment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"new_content_container_791536\"><!-- PL#18333 --><!-- P\/L#18333 -->Tony Hall, Director-General of the BBC, said: \u201cSue Lloyd-Roberts was an exceptional journalist.\u00a0\u00a0She was important, ground-breaking and fearless&#8230;\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"new_content_container_791541\">\n<p><!-- PL#18333 --> <!-- quote --><\/p>\n<div id=\"content_container_476525\">\n<figure class=\"quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"quote-body\"><p>\u201cIn the BBC and beyond, we need to do more to support determined, ambitious young journalists who want to pursue the biggest, most important stories. We\u2019re taking action to ensure that the fearless, investigative journalism she stood for, and helped to define, will live on.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"new_content_container_791543\">\n<p>Professor of Journalism at Cardiff University, Richard Sambrook, said: \u201cWe are so pleased that the fund set up by Sue\u2019s many friends and family will provide a legacy for her extraordinary work and commitment to justice and equality around the world&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"new_content_container_791545\">\n<p><!-- PL#18333 --> <!-- quote --><\/p>\n<div id=\"content_container_476525\">\n<figure class=\"quote with-image\">\n<blockquote class=\"quote-body\"><p>\u201cCardiff University is delighted that the generous contribution from the BBC will transform the opportunities for generations of new journalists in the years ahead.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- P\/L#18333 --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"new_content_container_791547\">\n<p>The first recipient of the award was Grace Adeniji <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(Broadcast Journalism 2016-)<span style=\"color: #000000\">.<\/span><\/span> Grace, who sees journalism as an important means of fighting for human rights and against corruption, took up her place on the Broadcast Journalism MA course in September and will graduate this year. Applications for this year\u2019s scholarship are currently open.<\/p>\n<p>Cardiff University\u2019s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies is one of the country\u2019s top rated institutions for media teaching.
