{"id":2002,"date":"2017-04-28T09:01:58","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T09:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/?p=2002"},"modified":"2022-04-13T16:14:25","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T16:14:25","slug":"tedx-talks-to-cardiff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/2017\/04\/28\/tedx-talks-to-cardiff\/","title":{"rendered":"TEDx talks to Cardiff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Last week, the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?q=tedx+cardiff&amp;rls=com.microsoft:en-GB&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;startIndex=&amp;startPage=1&amp;gfe_rd=cr&amp;ei=XAoDWaSoHMWT8QfFnoTICA&amp;gws_rd=ssl#spf=1\">TEDx<\/a> series returned to Cardiff for the first time since 2015, with a line-up including alumni Dr Mark Taubert <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(PgDip 2007, MSc 2010)<\/span> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/44219-burnap-pete\">Dr Pete Burnap <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(PhD 2010)<\/span><\/a> as well as Head of Cardiff&#8217;s School of Law and Politics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/480963-lindstadt-rene\">Professor Ren\u00e9 Linds<em>t\u00e4<\/em>dt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TEDx, a global series of innovative public lectures covering a wide range of topics, was sponsored by Cardiff University and held before a capacity crowd the city\u2019s Tramshed venue on 22 April.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Taubert, director for palliative care at Velindre Cancer Centre and an MSc tutor at Cardiff, focused his talk on \u201cwhat we can learn from people who are faced with incurable, palliative illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI meet such individuals daily in my job, and the insights they provide can, in a slightly paradoxical way, be very life-affirming,\u201d he said, echoing the sentiments expressed <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/2016\/11\/24\/a-conversation-i-had-with-a-dying-patient-went-global-by-means-of-david-bowie\/\">in his open letter<\/a> to the late pop superstar David Bowie.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Burnap, a senior lecturer at Cardiff\u2019s School of Computer Science &amp; Informatics and data scientist, discussed his around algorithms for the automated identification of hateful social media posts in the wake of trigger events such as the EU referendum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are able to mine millions of tweets and identify the hateful ones in real time, studying their volume over time and considering how and when they propagate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, political science expert Professor Linds<em>t\u00e4<\/em>dt used his slot to \u201caddress the important, and at the same time fragile, role that the U.S. Supreme Court plays in ensuring that isolationist policies don&#8217;t take a hold in the U.S. and spread from there to other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very excited and honored to have been a part of TEDx Cardiff 2017.
