It is with pride that we announce that a number of Cardiff University members have been honoured for their outstanding contribution to all areas of society in the 2016 Queen\u2019s Birthday Honours.<\/p>\n

\"Sir<\/a><\/figure>\n

Knights Bachelor<\/strong><\/p>\n

Knighthood<\/strong><\/p>\n

Former Vice-Chancellor, Sir David Grant CBE, FREng, FLSW, FIET, CEng, was awarded a knighthood for services to engineering, technology and education.<\/p>\n

Sir David led the University from 2001-2012 and was recognised for his wide-ranging contribution to engineering, technology and education.\u00a0 Under his leadership, Cardiff University recorded a number of milestones including the creation of the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre<\/a>, increasing student numbers and achieving Investors in People status – the first Russell Group University to do so.<\/p>\n

Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Riordan said: \u201cPerhaps most importantly during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University, Sir David Grant helped bring about the merger with the University of Wales College of Medicine. This substantial achievement in turn helped the University become one of the world\u2019s most successful research-intensive universities.”<\/p>\n

Commander of the British Empire (CBE)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Laura McAllister (PhD 1995, Hon 2013) <\/strong>was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to sport in Wales. Chair of Sport Wales until earlier this year, Professor McAllister is also a board member of UK Sport and the Welsh Football Trust.\u00a0 She was recently featured in Cardiff Connect Spring 2016<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Professor Peter McGuffin (Hon 2007)<\/strong> of the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College London was also awarded a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to Biomedical Research and Psychiatric Genetics.<\/p>\n

Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michael Thomas Brown (MSc 2004) <\/strong>was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Policing and Mental Health.\u00a0 A West Midlands Police officer since 1998, Michael is currently seconded to the College of Policing as the Mental Health Coordinator. Read more about Michael and his work on our Examined Life article.<\/a><\/p>\n

Professor Ruth Northway (CertEd FE 1991)<\/strong> was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Learning Disability Nursing.\u00a0 Since 2002, Professor Northway has headed the Unit for Development in Intellectual Disabilities at the University of South Wales.<\/p>\n

Professor Ian Gerrard Peate (LLM 2002)<\/strong> was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Nursing and Nurse Education.\u00a0 Professor Peate is a visiting Professor from St. Georges, University of London and Kingston University and head of School of Health Studies in Gibraltar. \u00a0He also is the current Editor in Chief of the British Journal of Nursing.<\/em><\/p>\n

Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Helen Houston<\/strong> of the School of Medicine was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to medical education and health services in South Wales.\u00a0 Professor Houston has helped transform medical education through her research which has examined the availability of careers advice in medical schools and support programmes for medical students and doctors, among other areas.<\/p>\n

Tania Strange (MSc 2004)<\/strong> was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to Nursing Care in South East Wales.\u00a0 Tania is a divisional nurse in primary care for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.<\/p>\n
