Both of my parents died of cancer, so I’ve seen how brutal and indiscriminate it can be – I’m motivated to make a difference.

“I’ve devoted most of my career to understanding the molecular mechanisms of mutation in cancer. In the more than 30 years that I have worked in this field, I’ve personally seen how research has positively impacted diagnostics and treatments.

“We know that patients who attend research active centres have better outcomes. I consider it vitally important to support the cancer research here in Cardiff, so that patients in Wales have the opportunity to access the latest treatments.

“Funds raised from the Cardiff Half Marathon go towards PhD studentships and early-career researchers at Cardiff University. I think it’s true to say that most scientists have their best ideas early in their careers, so it’s essential to keep supporting the next generation. They’re the ones who will develop innovative new ways to diagnose and treat cancer.

“I started running in 2018, initially joining the Barry Island Park Run. When the COVID lockdowns happened, I tried to keep going, but I found I preferred to run with others and wanted to join a club. I was a bit reluctant at first, as I thought that they would be quite serious and elite! But eventually I joined our local running club, the Penarth and Dinas Runners, and have really enjoyed meeting like-minded people with a broad range of abilities.

“Running is quite addictive, so much so that even on a cold, wet and windy Friday morning in winter, I still want to get up and do the 7am ‘tempo blast’ with the club. If I’m unable to run because illness or injury, I get very fed up!

“This will be my first half marathon. My friends and family were quite surprised I signed up, as it’s not the sort of thing I’ve done before. They’ve already been very supportive with my fundraising, which I’m really grateful for.

“On race day I’m looking forward to the positive atmosphere and sheer scale of the event – the crowds, the cheers, the music! I’m aiming for a race time of less than 1 hour 45 minutes, so I’ll be pleased with the encouragement.”

Support Duncan

Show your support for Duncan and help him hit his fundraising target. Sponsor Duncan on JustGiving.

Take on an active challenge

You don’t have to be a marathon runner to take on an active challenge!
