Flow Enzymology

20 January 2017

In a new paper in the European Journal of Organic Chemistry, Xiaoping shows how the yield of terpene cyclase reactions can be dramatically improved using a flow reactor. In cases where release of a hydrophobic product is rate-limiting, intimate contact with an organic phase is essential to improve turnover, however rapid stirring can precipitate the enzyme. Xiaoping's work shows how segmented flow can be used to create droplets with large surface area to volume ratios allowing efficient extraction with less mechanical disruption.
