And how can the expertise that exists across an institution be harnessed to support learning and teaching enhancement?

Since 2023, Cardiff University’s Fellowship Programmes have explored these questions through a series of co-creation events that bring together Fellowship participants to collaboratively address educational challenges and develop practical resources.

The most recent event provides an example of how participant voice can inform meaningful professional learning. Feedback from colleagues highlighted a desire to explore behaviour-related challenges in more depth. In response, rather than developing resources centrally, the Fellowship team invited the wider Fellowship community to work together to address this identified need.

This approach is underpinned by the idea that learning is fundamentally social. Mercer (2000) describes interthinking as the process through which people use dialogue to build shared understanding. Rather than viewing expertise as residing with a small group of specialists, collaborative approaches recognise that valuable knowledge exists across a professional community.

What can higher education practitioners learn from this approach?

Start with authentic practitioner needs. Professional learning is often most meaningful when it is shaped by challenges emerging directly from practice rather than predetermined development agendas.

Create opportunities for collaborative knowledge-building. Designing structured spaces for dialogue, reflection, and inquiry enables colleagues to share expertise, challenge assumptions, and develop a collective understanding of complex educational issues.

Recognise colleagues as co-creators of professional knowledge. Rather than positioning expertise within a small group of specialists, collaborative approaches draw on the experiences and insights that exist across a professional community.

As with the outputs from similar co-creation events in 2024 and 2025, the resources generated through this event will become part of the Fellowship Programmes’ ongoing provision, ensuring that the insights and expertise contributed by participants continue to support future cohorts. At the same time, the process has strengthened connections across the Fellowship community, demonstrating how co-creation can serve as a powerful mechanism for collective learning, capacity building and educational enhancement.

Here’s what one of our co-creators said about taking part in the 2026 co-creation event:

“The workshop provided an opportunity for staff to look at problems experienced and engage with others across departments and subjects in working toward. Understanding scenarios from different perspectives can alleviate and identify realistic solutions, alternative ways of doing. It was a really positive experience… As someone in professional services, I don’t utilise my former teaching skills to the same extent anymore. So, it was great to know that my experience and knowledge still hold value and can be applied in a slightly different context”.

We look forward to inviting colleagues to our Summer 2027 co-creation event!
