As the University continues to explore the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence,\u00a0we have been\u00a0supporting\u00a0the\u00a0great\u00a0practice\u00a0already\u00a0happening across our learning and teaching community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AI is now part of\u00a0our\u00a0everyday lives,\u00a0study\u00a0and work.\u00a0We are no longer asking\u00a0whether\u00a0to use AI but how to use it effectively and responsibly.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our aim is to ensure that Cardiff University\u00a0remains\u00a0at the forefront of inclusive and innovative responses to AI in education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Working with colleagues in the AI in Education\u00a0Group, we\u00a0have\u00a0published\u00a0updated\u00a0<\/span>staff guidance on the use of AI in education<\/span><\/a>, now available on the intranet. This resource offers practical advice, examples, and considerations for integrating AI into teaching and learning in a responsible and pedagogically sound way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have also\u00a0worked with students to\u00a0create new\u00a0<\/span>guidance\u00a0<\/span><\/a>to support them in the ethical and responsible use of generative AI technologies as part of their learning\u00a0experience. This approach is informed by sector-wide standards, including the Russell Group\u2019s principles on the use of generative AI in education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What next?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

We\u00a0are\u00a0planning to\u00a0co-create\u00a0further\u00a0resources with students to better reflect their\u00a0specific\u00a0uses\u00a0of AI tools\u00a0for their studies\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0capture their\u00a0perspectives, exploring\u00a0the ways they can support learning and academic work.\u00a0All\u00a0of\u00a0this using\u00a0validated and\u00a0trusted sources, of course.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the meantime, please encourage students to\u00a0complete the\u00a0<\/span>Academic\u00a0Integrity module\u00a0<\/span><\/a>in their Learning Central Organisations<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The module includes\u00a0content on\u00a0using generative\u00a0AI in the context of academic integrity.\u00a0By completing the module, students\u00a0develop their\u00a0understanding of\u00a0honest,\u00a0ethical\u00a0and responsible conduct\u00a0when\u00a0submitting\u00a0academic work.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For our colleagues,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0also developing an online version of\u00a0the\u00a0popular\u00a0<\/span>AI and productivity in the workplace workshop<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0designed\u00a0to help staff build confidence and competence in using AI tools effectively and ethically in their day-to-day work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Final\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>houghts<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Cardiff University\u00a0is encouraging the use of AI to enhance teaching and learning through digital platforms like Blackboard Ultra and\u00a0Mentimeter\u00a0(watch this space for another blog about AI tools in\u00a0Mentimeter!). These tools are increasingly integrating AI features that support personalised learning, streamline feedback, and create more engaging, interactive experiences for students and staff.\u00a0We want our students to use AI tools as scaffolding,\u00a0not as\u00a0an\u00a0alternative or complete replacement<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>for learning.\u00a0We want our students to understand what is\u00a0permitted\u00a0and what is\u00a0not and we want them to become confident users of these\u00a0tools, acknowledging GenAI\u00a0assistance.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We want our colleagues to\u00a0lead by example, protect transparency and authenticity in assessment design,\u00a0apply human-centred approach\u00a0and ethical mind\u00a0to module design.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As we continue to explore\u00a0further\u00a0and enhance our\u00a0guidance,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0clear\u00a0that\u00a0AI is here to stay.\u00a0As Dr. Charles Knight\u00a0says: \u201c<\/span>AI expands what\u2019s possible, but not what\u2019s purposeful\u201d,\u00a0which opens\u00a0the door to our collective strengths and human skills.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
