{"id":4849,"date":"2024-03-12T14:20:05","date_gmt":"2024-03-12T14:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/LTAcademy\/?p=4849"},"modified":"2024-03-12T14:23:09","modified_gmt":"2024-03-12T14:23:09","slug":"mental-health-and-wellbeing-in-uk-higher-education-current-initiatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/LTAcademy\/mental-health-and-wellbeing-in-uk-higher-education-current-initiatives\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental health and wellbeing in UK Higher Education current initiatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Cristina Higuera Mart\u00edn, Education Developer<\/strong> in the <strong>Education Development Service<\/strong> outlines current strategic approaches and evidence-based practices in the UK HE sector to prevent or address mental wellbeing issues, and to promote a healthy and positive learning and teaching experience for all.<\/p>\n<p>In her <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/LTAcademy\/mental-health-and-wellbeing-in-uk-higher-education-research-drivers\/\">previous blog,<\/a> Cristina outlined the multiple drivers that are shaping mental health and wellbeing decisions in UK universities.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is considered best practice?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Advance HE mental health and wellbeing conference (2023) highlighted as best practice adopting whole-university approaches that promote wellbeing through:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Physical <strong>spaces<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Online <strong>presence <\/strong>and<\/li>\n<li>Learning and teaching <strong>experiences<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Moving forward, the ideal landscape would reflect an optimal balance between practical and pedagogical considerations, and the wellbeing of staff and students.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Current initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A wide range of evidence-based initiatives are currently being deployed in the sector to support the mental health and wellbeing of students and staff. These include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Coaching, mentoring and buddy systems<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>coaching training (Bordogna &amp; Lundgren-Resenterra, 2023) for doctoral and master supervisors<\/li>\n<li>hybrid mentoring programmes for staff and students<\/li>\n<li>student buddy support systems which give students access to an experienced peer who can provide friendly advice and support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Drop-ins, counselling and wellbeing advisers<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>peer-led drop-in hybrid sessions structured around mental health and wellbeing topics<\/li>\n<li>peer-led drop-in service supported by clinical staff available to any student feeling lonely, homesick, worrying or upset<\/li>\n<li>four free counselling appointments for solution-focused brief interventions, which can be extended via GP referral<\/li>\n<li>access to a wellbeing adviser. Wellbeing advisers facilitate proactive wellbeing skill building, offer advice and signposting to staff and student representatives, and provide specialist support to students with a history of trauma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Continuing professional development<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>role-based training in restorative supervision (Walker and Jennison, 2023) for personal tutors and front-line staff<\/li>\n<li>compulsory training in pastoral support for personal tutors and doctoral supervisors (Hayball, 2023)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> Mental health profiling<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Used for prevention as well as to target and personalise interventions. Descriptive data about students is collected, clustered via a statistical modelling process and then interpreted to inform decision making.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> Self-help tools<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>A survey around different wellbeing related topics (Meyer and Sidiropoulou, 2023). Participants completing the survey receive feedback, information about self-care strategies and personalised recommendations based on their responsesa<\/li>\n<li>Online materials exploring emotional awareness, encouraging help seeking behaviour, recognising achievements and valuing learning opportunities (Positive Digital Practices, 2023).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong> Retreats in nature<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Master dissertation writing retreats have been found (Stevenson, 2020) to counteract stress and feelings of isolation among students during their dissertation experience.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong> Targeted newsletters and leaflets<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Newsletters are being sent at key points to students to support them through transitions such as going through summative assessments<\/li>\n<li>Leaflets are being deployed with a harm-reduction approach.
