Now the new academic year is with us (and conscious that some programmes have been teaching for a while already), I just wanted to suggest a few things worth considering in the days and weeks ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First up, let\u2019s not forget the <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.cardiff.ac.uk\/staff\/supporting-your-work\/coronavirus-outbreak\/coronavirus-governance-groups\/education-and-student-experience\/digital-education-programme\/digital-learning-framework\/five-key-principles\">principles<\/a>\nwhich we set out at the beginning of the Digital Education Programme to guide\nour work this year. I think they still hold up and if I had to choose one that\nreally matters right now I\u2019d go for <em>Keep It Simple<\/em>. The fundamentals of\nonline learning do not require sophisticated use of technology and getting the\nbasics right will make the world of difference to your students. The two key\nthings I\u2019d focus on would be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Clear and regular communication<\/em> \u2013 the current circumstances are understandably causing confusion and sometimes anxiety so anything we can do to guide and reassure students will be time well spent. A cheerful video message from you in Learning Central and clear details of forthcoming learning activities in a <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.cardiff.ac.uk\/staff\/supporting-your-work\/coronavirus-outbreak\/coronavirus-governance-groups\/education-and-student-experience\/digital-education-programme\/digital-learning-framework\/weekly-module-map-template\">Weekly Module Map<\/a> would both be well received I\u2019m sure.<br><\/li><li><em>Engagement<\/em> &#8211; use your synchronous time with students (on campus or online) to create a dialogue and build relationships (including activities that allow students to get to know some of their peers). Information delivery can work very well asynchronously so when you\u2019re together you can prioritise giving plenty of opportunity for questions, clarification and listening to students\u2019 thoughts and ideas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you need any help and support with the digital elements\nof your teaching, please don\u2019t hesitate to make use of our <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.cardiff.ac.uk\/staff\/supporting-your-work\/coronavirus-outbreak\/coronavirus-governance-groups\/education-and-student-experience\/digital-education-programme\/trainingandsupport\/online-support-resources\">resources<\/a>\nand\/or contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.cardiff.ac.uk\/staff\/supporting-your-work\/coronavirus-outbreak\/coronavirus-governance-groups\/education-and-student-experience\/digital-education-programme\/trainingandsupport\/digital-education-support-service\">Digital\nEducation Support Service<\/a>. We may hit a few bumps in the road to start with\nbut I\u2019m also convinced there will be some genuinely great learning and teaching\nexperiences this semester.
