As a new intern within the Centre of Education Support and Innovation, I was pleased to be given the chance to attend a conference led by this very department on Tuesday 3 July.\u00a0 The conference focused on \u2018Education Innovation in Practice\u2019 and served as a fascinating insight into what goes on behind the scenes within learning and teaching. As a student it was refreshing to have the opportunity to converse with staff in a different setting about approaches to education and trying out new ideas.<\/p>\n

The workshop that piqued my interest most of all was titled \u2018Prelude to change: understanding your own digital practice\u2019 (developed by Donna Lanclos and Lawrie Phipps for the Jisc Digital Leaders Course).<\/em>\u00a0This was led by Dewi Parry<\/a> from the CESI Learning Technology team and Matt Smith<\/a> of the WCPPE, School of Pharmacy.\u00a0 For both students and staff, our use of digital technology is so ubiquitous that sometimes we forget how much we rely on it.\u00a0 For that reason I was intrigued to learn more about this session.<\/p>\n

The workshop began with an invitation to sketch out a triangle on a large piece of paper, in line with the image below:\"Triangle<\/p>\n

Sitting on a table with other academics, I was then encouraged to think about how I create, consume and converse with others digitally. This included both within the institution, as well as externally \u2013 whether that be catching up on news or speaking to friends over social media. It was important to include apps that we might use on our phones and tablets, as well as websites like Google that are so obvious that it\u2019s easy to miss.<\/p>\n

What quickly became clear was the variety of websites my fellow students and staff use, and for different purposes. Some of us tended to consume material more than we created.<\/p>\n

We were invited to add emoji stickers alongside different digital practices to express our emotions about each. \u00a0As a student you have a vague understanding of what academics do outside their scheduled contact hours with you. However it was illuminating to realise just how many emails academics may receive during the course of their working day, and why it may take them a little longer to respond sometimes.<\/p>\n

It is useful to consider how our use of technology gradually evolves over time. We had an interesting discussion about how texting and making telephone calls for personal use had dropped, with WhatsApp and social media dominating instead.<\/p>\n

Overall it was a welcome opportunity to reflect on the digital tools we use and why, and how this could be used more effectively. It was stimulating not to be given advice on how to use software, but instead slow down and consider whether as individuals we could be using our digital tools differently.<\/p>\n

Fel myfyriwr, roedd yn braf cael cyfle i siarad \u00e2 staff mewn lleoliad gwahanol ynghylch dulliau o ymdrin ag addysg a rhoi cynnig ar syniadau newydd.<\/p>\n

Ochr yn ochr ag academyddion eraill o gwmpas y bwrdd, cefais fy annog wedyn i ystyried sut rwy\u2019n creu, yn defnyddio ac yn sgwrsio ag eraill yn ddigidol. Roedd hyn yn cynnwys o fewn y sefydliad, yn ogystal ag yn allanol \u2013 boed hynny\u2019n golygu dal i fyny gyda\u2019r newyddion neu siarad \u00e2 ffrindiau dros y cyfryngau cymdeithasol. Roedd yn bwysig cynnwys apiau y gallem fod yn eu defnyddio ar ein ffonau a\u2019n tabledi, yn ogystal \u00e2 gwefannau fel Google sydd mor amlwg nes bod yn hawdd anghofio amdanynt.<\/p>\n

Daeth yn amlwg yn fuan iawn fod fy nghyd-fyfyrwyr a\u2019r staff yn defnyddio amrywiaeth helaeth o wefannau, a hynny at ddibenion gwahanol. Roedd rhai ohonom yn tueddu i ddefnyddio deunydd yn fwy na’i greu.<\/p>\n

Cawsom ein gwahodd i ychwanegu sticeri emoji yn ymyl gwahanol arferion digidol i fynegi ein hemosiynau am bob un.\u00a0 Fel myfyriwr mae gennych ddealltwriaeth fras o\u2019r hyn mae academyddion yn ei wneud y tu allan i\u2019w horiau cyswllt gyda chi sydd ar yr amserlen.\u00a0 Ond roedd yn agoriad llygad sylweddoli faint o negeseuon e-bost gall academyddion eu derbyn yn ystod eu diwrnod gwaith, a pham gallan nhw gymryd ychydig mwy o amser i ymateb weithiau.<\/p>\n

Mae’n ddefnyddiol ystyried sut mae ein defnydd o dechnoleg yn esblygu\u2019n raddol dros amser. Cawsom drafodaeth ddiddorol am sut roedd nifer y negeseuon testun a\u2019r galwadau ff\u00f4n personol wedi gostwng, gyda WhatsApp a’r cyfryngau cymdeithasol yn cael y lle blaenaf yn lle hynny.<\/p>\n

Yn gyffredinol roedd yn gyfle da i fyfyrio ar yr offer digidol rydym ni\u2019n eu defnyddio a pham, a sut gellid eu defnyddio\u2019n fwy effeithiol.\u00a0 Roedd yn ysgogiad peidio \u00e2 chael ein cynghori ynghylch sut mae defnyddio meddalwedd, ond yn hytrach arafu ac ystyried, fel unigolion, a allem ni fod yn defnyddio ein hoffer digidol mewn ffordd wahanol.<\/p>\n
