{"id":2042,"date":"2017-07-17T13:38:48","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T13:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/learning-technology\/?p=2042"},"modified":"2022-04-13T15:46:53","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T15:46:53","slug":"jisc-connect-more-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/LTAcademy\/jisc-connect-more-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"JISC Connect More 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karl_luke\">Karl Luke<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last month, I attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/events\/connect-more-in-england-bristol-27-jun-2017\">JISC Connect More 2017<\/a> event in Bristol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and was particularly interested in two specific programmes showcased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Preparing staff and students to be digitally ready<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Christine Percival, Digital Fluency Manager from Lancaster University gave the opening keynote. Christine introduced<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/iss\/digital\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lancaster&#8217;s digital strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and their<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/digital\/about\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Fluency Framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Christine discussed how they have sought to use digital fluency as an enabler to achieve their digital vision. This involved establishing a digital strategy advisory group, a digital fluency steering group and re-modelling their<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/iss\/training\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Information Systems Services (ISS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to provide staff and students with training to increase their digital capabilities and confidence. Related initiatives Lancaster have established include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">employing<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/lancaster.box.com\/bristolconnectmore2017\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Skills Graduate Interns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">funding<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/digital-bursary\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Digital Projects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">establishing an online course offering a Digital Skills Certificate for students, which is linked to HEAR transcript and Lancaster Award.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I think the work done at Lancaster is worth reading and evaluating in light of the work currently being carried out at Cardiff. \u00a0The Jisc Case Study can be read at:<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/repository.jisc.ac.uk\/6639\/1\/DigicapLancasterUniversity.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">http:\/\/repository.jisc.ac.uk\/6639\/1\/DigicapLancasterUniversity.pdf<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Data-driven decision making<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/rd\/projects\/business-intelligence-project\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">JISC analytics lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was introduced in a session and participants were offered the opportunity to explore<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fNp9sy8Jgx4\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Heidi Plus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for data visualisation. I was interested in exploring if this platform could be of benefit to the education portfolio programmes and for teaching and learning more generally. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I spoke with Sarah Davies (Head of Higher Education and Student Experience at Jisc) who mentioned that other institutions were looking at how best to capture and analyse data from virtual learning environments and associated learning technology tools.
