All of us need support at times, but these times aren’t always convenient in our 9-5 world. It can be difficult to find help during weekends, or over the Christmas holiday, or at 3am the night before a piece of coursework is due in, but these can be the times when we’re most in need. At the Counselling, Health and Wellbeing service we recognise that you might need support at any time of the day or night, and in response to this we’ve introduced SilverCloud.

Online support 24/7

SilverCloud is an online support service which is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It’s a series of self-help programmes based on the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which aim to teach you how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours interact with each other, and how this interaction can lead to psychological distress. Each programme will teach you new coping strategies, help you challenge your negative thoughts and ultimately improve your wellbeing.

Focus on your specific needs

Four programmes are available, each focussing on a different problem:

  • ‘Space from Depression’ aims to reduce symptoms of depression;
  • ‘Space from Anxiety’ helps you cope with worry and anxious thoughts;
  • ‘Space from Stress’ focusses on stress;
  • ‘Space for Positive Body Image’ helps you deal with the interconnected issues of body image and self-esteem.

If you’re not sure which programme would be most suitable for you, you can attend our Wellbeing Walk-In and a member of staff will be able to point you in the right direction!

How it works

Each programme consists of 6-7 modules which you can work through at your own pace. Each module takes about an hour to complete and it’s recommended that you finish the programme within about 8 weeks. Each module contains useful information about the causes and symptoms of the problem you’re experiencing, as well as activities (such as guided diary entries, videos to watch and mindfulness exercises) to help you overcome it. There’s also a journal you can fill in if you’d like somewhere to collect your thoughts while you work through the programme. You can revisit each module and each activity as many times as you like, so support is only a click away whenever you need it.

You can either work through the modules by yourself or, if you’d prefer a little more hands-on support, you can request an Online Supporter. This will be a member of our team who will keep an eye on your progress and get in touch with tips and encouragement at pre-agreed times. You can choose which activities and journal entries you’d like your Supporter to see, so you can share as much or as little as you like – whatever’s comfortable for you.
