‘Recruiters have confirmed that 32% of this year’s entry-level positions are expected to be filled by graduates who have already worked for their organisations, either through paid internships, industrial placements or vacation work’ (High Fliers Research, 2016)
From my own experience I’m very grateful to have found two unpaid internships last year through the Work Experience team, and I’m looking to apply for more insights and graduate internships through them in the upcoming future. I cannot emphasise enough how helpful and supportive everyone was during my time at the placements. I met a lot of new people, and am confident in providing strong and up-to-date references to future employers. I hope this blog will help you and that you can start gaining some great experience yourself!
Why is Work Experience important?
In an increasingly saturated job market, work experience can make a huge difference to your CV. As frustrating as it sounds, simply having a degree is often no longer enough and employers nowadays are continually looking for students who have gone that extra mile.
Work experience can potentially:
- help you get a better job on graduation
- help you stand out from the crowd
- give you a chance to put academic knowledge into practice
- allow you to test out some career options
- build your confidence by working with others
- develop skills employers are looking for
- bridge the gap between university and the world of work
- help you to understand how organisations work from an internal perspective
- demonstrate a level of commitment to an employer
