Enterprise Manager, Rhys, shares his tips for an enterprising summer…
Summer is the perfect time to try something new; safe in the knowledge that you’ll be back in tutorials come October. Why not step out of your comfort zone with these tips for an enterprising summer.
Do you make and create? Be it cakes, clothes, or crafts – you could be selling at festivals and markets. It’s a great way to understand customers and hone your selling skills, not to mention potentially turning a profit.
- Get your market stall licence
- Get public liability insurance (it’s no harder than getting holiday insurance!)
- Food business registration and hygiene (for the cake makers)
- Don’t forget to cost these things into your prices!
Start by registering a stall at the Grangetown Summer Festival on the 17 June 2017. Or if you want to gain experience of working at a community festival we’re also recruiting volunteers now – contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Offer your services
If you’re at a loose end you could be adding value to your spare time. Simply invest in tools (or borrow someone else’s) and become your neighbourhood gardener, cleaner or bicycle mechanic. Being your own boss is great because every penny of profit is yours to keep; but more importantly you could boost your marketing and selling skills and improve your personal resilience.
Create an online portfolio
This is for anyone aiming for a career in the creative industries, from photography to journalism, graphics to fashion. Your online portfolio is your shop window for clients and employers to see what you can do. Getting started couldn’t be easier with our 5-minute tutorial on How to Create a Website.
The Enterprise & Start-up Team are running a three day programme for anyone already planning a business or social enterprise:
7 to 9 June, Students’ Union
For any student or recent graduate with a solid business idea or who is currently running a business part time. This event will help you build on your ideas, business plans and to leave with clear direction on how to move forward.
