Emma, Student Intern tells us more about Internships and the First Year Internship Bootcamp 2-5 February …
Your first year at university can be an overwhelming one and whilst graduation may be the last thing on your mind, you only have two summer holidays until you’ll be applying for full time employment!
The number of job applications made by finalists has soared by 75 per cent in the last five years, competition is fierce and your CV needs to stand out. Work experience and internships are becoming ‘The New Interview’ in order to recruit full time staff upon student’s graduation.
“Graduate recruiters warn that in a highly competitive job market, new graduates who’ve not had any work experience at all during their studies are increasingly unlikely to be offered a good graduate job after university” (Graduatefog.co.uk).
The facts confirm this statement: 69% of companies with 100 or more employees offered full-time jobs to their interns in 2012, according to a new survey. In other words; you have a 7 in 10 chance of being hired by the company you interned with. 66% of employers believe interview performance and relevant work experience are the most important factors in their hiring decisions—far more significant than strong academic performance.
Work placements are not only a good addition to your CV but are also a good way to earn money, learn new skills and meet new people. As a third year student, I cannot express how important it is to actively engage with employers early on in your university life. Work experience gives you the opportunity to find new interests and can help you in finding the right career choice, especially for those who are unsure what they want to do (like I was).
If you are reading this concerned that your CV is bare, do not panic!!
