6 Christmas markets worth a visit

Kate, Student Intern, shares the top six Christmas markets to cheaply access from Cardiff…

It’s that time of the year again! The nights are longer, the weather is colder and everything is a bit more sparkly and covered in fairy lights! This is your guide to exploring the UK’s best Christmas markets at the lowest prices from Cardiff over the Christmas break.

1. Cardiff University Christmas Market

One very close to home! Why not give the Enterprise Cardiff Market a visit? Join the Enterprise team and it’s enterprising students on 6 December 2016, 12:00-15:00 in the Students’ Union.

2. Cardiff

Look no further, one of the UK’s top Christmas markets is on your doorstep! With the combination of high streets full of little wooden huts and the magical transformation of the park outside City Hall into Winter Wonderland there is no easier Christmas market to access than this one! There is something for everyone here, so grab your housemates and make an evening out of ice skating with penguins (not real unfortunately) and indulging yourself on German hotdogs and warm brownies.

3. London

Feeling a little more adventurous? London is full of different Christmas markets! Now I hear you saying, ‘but that’s so expensive to get to!’ Let me stop you right there and introduce you to every students travel best friend, the Megabus. With tickets to London as cheap as £1 there really is no excuse not to head over to the big city and check out the Christmas markets. Don’t forget to explore Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park as well and have a go at winning a stuffed dinosaur you never knew you wanted so badly.

4. Bath

This is easily accessible by train and Bath Christmas market has to be one of the prettiest in the country. This has a whooping 170 stalls throughout the historic streets of Bath, and you can also check out the Roman Baths on the same trip! If it’s ice skating you want then there is a lovely ice rink by Royal Victoria park which is always popular.

5. Birmingham

Always wanted to go to Germany and experience their Christmas markets, but don’t have the time or the funds to do so? We have the perfect solution for you. Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham is the biggest German market outside of Germany and Austria. Another bonus is that you can travel by Megabus to Birmingham and with buses running late into the evening you can easily make this into a day trip! The streets are packed full of German stalls and the food here is every hungry students dream!

Top tip: don’t eat from the first stall you come across as there is so much to choose from. Explore a bit first and then in true military fashion plan you eating schedule for the evening.

6. Manchester

For all you Northerner fans out there, Manchester Christmas market is known for being one of the best for a wide variety of themed stalls from across Europe. This is also accessible by Megabus for super cheap prices and can easily be made into a day trip, just bring a book for the coach journey!

So that is a brief insight into the magical Christmas market world that the UK has to offer, and it is all easily reachable to you! Round up your friends and housemates, take a break from university work and go and enjoy a magical evening of mulled wine and glittery wooden huts.
