
Richa, PGT Scholar
Richa’s Postgraduate Taught Scholarship has allowed her to pursue her passion for mental health by studying MSc Psychiatry at a world-leading Russell Group university.
Can you tell us a little bit about the programme in your own words?
“The programme is mainly theoretical, however there is clinical involvement through patient cases and placements.The lectures are given by academics from within the School and guest lecturers as well. Students come from many backgrounds, however the dominant ones being Psychology and Medicine. ”
What did the Postgraduate Taught Scholarship mean to you?
“It meant more than I could explain, without it there would have been no way I could have afforded to do this course. It allowed me to continue my academic journey and obtain the qualifications I require for my career, as well as studying a subject I feel very passionate about. I am eternally grateful for that.”
Have you been able to secure funding from other places, how else are you supporting your studies?
“I am currently also working part-time in the Students Union to help fund my studies/living costs/travel to and from placements.”
What were your motivations for undertaking a postgraduate degree?
“I am very passionate about mental health, and this MSc will act as a stepping stone towards further professional qualifications/research I wish to do.”
Why did you decide to do your postgraduate degree at Cardiff?
“I am interested in research within my field, and I applied to Cardiff as it is renowned for research achievements, being a Russell Group University.”
What do you think of Cardiff as a place to live as a postgraduate?
“Cardiff has been an amazing place to live as a postgrad student, both socially and in terms of services for studying. The city centre is very accessible and the Graduate Centre has proven to be a nice place to study throughout the year, with help readily available through student wardens.”
How do you think your postgraduate course will contribute to your future career plans?
“It has allowed me to focus my interests within mental health to specific aspects of the profession, which allows me to now consider applying for more focussed PhDs/professional qualifications.”
Has studying for a postgraduate degree at Cardiff University lived up to your expectations?
“Yes, it has exceeded it. The whole experience so far has been very pleasant. Cardiff University has really made me feel looked after as a postgraduate student, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more, especially as the whole process of moving to a new city can be very daunting.”
