Thanks to his Postgraduate Taught Scholarship, Kyle is studying Cardiff University’s MSc Social Science Research Methods. The rigorous design and reputation of School of Social Science staff ensured that he stayed in the city he loves.
Can you tell us a little bit about the programme in your own words?
“The SSRM programme is of rigorous design, aimed at preparing students for subsequent doctoral study in their pathway of choice. Modules provide the student with a holistic understanding of social science research – from its philosophical foundations and methodological design, to professional application and practice. Delivering the course are a team of reputed experts, each highly approachable and committed to assisting the development of tomorrows’ scholar.”
What did the Postgraduate Taught Scholarship mean to you?
“I received a Postgraduate Scholarship with the most sincere gratitude. With its financial assistance I have been able to pursue my studies on a full-time basis, thus avoiding the difficulties one might encounter with a part-time arrangement. As a result I believe it has allowed me to direct my focus in ways that benefit the pursuit of my potential.”
Have you been able to secure funding from other places, how else are you supporting your studies?
“I have money saved from a period of work prior to my university career that has enabled me to cover the remaining course costs. I undertake a number of days labour per fortnight in order to assist with maintenance. ”
What were your motivations for undertaking a postgraduate degree?
“Moving from work into academia allowed me to realise my passion for learning. For the satisfaction it affords, continuing onto post-graduate study presented as an obvious choice. Moreover, though my time in university I have acquired a great deal of admiration for research. It is hoped that the SSRM course will facilitate my ambitions of further PhD study.”
Why did you decide to do your postgraduate degree at Cardiff?
“As a proud citizen of Cardiff for 27 years, throughout my academic career I have made a concerted effort to remain within the locality. At undergraduate level I accepted available opportunities offered by another regional institution. While I appreciate my time there, I felt that only Cardiff University – for its reputation and research intensive endeavour – could provide the next suitable ‘stepping stone’.”
Is there anything about your postgraduate course that has stood out in your experience?
“The sheer professionalism of the School of Social Sciences has been most impressive. A level of pride and commitment stands to evidence its international reputation for research and learning. Regarding the course in particular, the school should be commended on its design – it is most thoughtfully directed to the ends for which it is intended.”
What do you think of Cardiff as a place to live as a postgraduate?
“As a Cardiff ‘native’ I run the risk of appearing a little biased. But in my comments I believe I encapsulate the sentiments of many of my fellow students. Cardiff is city exemplar. It embodies an excellent balance between history, culture, space and place. Its people are accommodating, its facilities sufficiently modern, and its leisurely infrastructure varied and inviting.”
How do you think your postgraduate course will contribute to your future career plans?
“Successful completion of the MSc in Social Science Research Methods (SSRM) will advance my prospective employment opportunities on account of the extensive skill set that it awards its students. While professional research opportunities may open here, I am interested to a greater extent in the possibility of advancing to PhD study. Should the privilege fall upon me, a career in academia is an exciting prospect.”
Has studying for a postgraduate degree at Cardiff University lived up to your expectations?
“Studying the MSc SSRM at Cardiff University has lived up to each and every expectation that I initially held. For my desired trajectory it has been most accommodating on all accounts. Indeed, such are the positives attached to my experience that time spent at the institution is been enjoyed in unforeseen ways. One matter pertaining here is the tremendous extent of facilities open to students – ranging from library and technological services to sport and leisure.”
What are your biggest achievements as a postgraduate student at Cardiff University so far?
“My greatest achievement at post-graduate level is overwhelmingly a personal one. For since starting the MSc in SSRM, positive feedback on coursework has/continued to relieve a confidence deficit that I have historically struggled with.”
