MAGMA Aims for 2021

8 January 2021

Happy New Year.
Blwyddyn Newydd Dda.

With 2020 behind us, we thought our first blog of 2021 should focus on what the group wants to achieve this year. It’s all pretty dire at the moment, however with vaccines being rolled out hopefully things will gradually get better as the year goes on. So here are our aims for 2021:

-Complete the lab refurbishments. We are hoping that this can be done early 2021 which will basically end the first stage of the MAGMA project and lead us on to delivering what we need to do. Speaking of…

-Secure at least £860k of research income and collaborate with six partners. These are lofty aims for the year, however we have lots of opportunities and are hoping we will achieve this.

-Host an online launch event for the operation in the first half of 2021. We are hoping to do this once the refurbishments are complete so we can incorporate a virtual lab tour. More on this will follow soon.

-Amend the project budget and secure a six month extension so the operation can continue until June 2023. We are hoping that this will be completed early 2021.

-Continue to produce the weekly blog and increase the standing of the group. There are lots of opportunities ahead of us including podcasts, conferences and publications. We will increase our presence on linkedin and aim to get over 100 followers on Twitter.

-Participate in further outreach opportunities. We are already hoping to be involved in the Cardiff Science Festival in February. The guiding badge activities are due to commence formally soon. There will be a host of other events happening this year also.

-For the whole team to meet in person. This has yet to happen since our newer members came in at the start of November. The rest of us have not been together since March. Fingers crossed this will be something we can do before the end of 2021.

So there we have it. Our plans are sure to change throughout the year and who knows what is going to happen. This time last year it seemed like it was going to be a very different year.

Stay safe.
