64 ways to say I love you
In this workshop I set out to demonstrate a full set of choices in the intonation systems of a standard accent of British English. I will show how the subsystems of tonality, tonicity and tone (both primary and secondary) express at least 64 separate meanings in relation to information structure, discourse function and attitudinal expression. I will show how this is possible in a single clause “I love you”. I will thus show how my model outperforms Halliday, Brazil and ToBI in range and delicacy.
