No, not the one you are probably thinking of or even the second one, this is the prestigious Boots Optom vs Pharmacy varsity that is now in it’s second year and happened this last weekend here in Cardiff. In this ultimate test of sporting prowess OPSOC and WPSA (the pharmacy society) battle it out for the Boots Varsity cup.
The day starts off with Badminton, 3 matches – men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Pharmacy won the first two so the third was a dead rubber but OPSOC staged a comeback. Still the first sport went to pharmacy (boooo!).
Next up was netball with both societies fielding an A and a B team, such is the engagement and interest from members. Both matches were keenly contested and resulted in a win for each team so pharmacy led the way leading into the lunch break.
After lunch it was time for the final event – football. This turned out a bit better for OPSOC, running out 3-0 winners which meant that after all the events the scores were tied at 3-3. That could only mean one thing – a penalty shoot out. Continuing the strong finish to the day, OPSOC duly won this 4-3 with Luke Summers smashing in the winning penalty.
With that it was time to adjourn to the bar for a couple of victory drinks before a joint social at a local pub and the union. There was a theme of animals and some cracking costumes on display (I’m not going to embarrass anyone by posting those).
Cardiff is the only university with this friendly inter-school rivalry and it serves as a great warm up for Opfest, a competition between all the optometry schools around the country which will be held in Aston next year.
