Handy or inconvenient? Technology and Social Media in Dortmund

3 March 2018

Social Media

One thing I have noticed, is that there are two extremes concerning social media; either pupils are totally absent from it, or they use it all the time, publishing everything they do on every site they can. When telling the children that I was leaving “für immer” the other day, the first thing that came to their minds was not “Frau Farr, please may I have your email address so we can stay in contact” but “Frau Farr, what’s your Instagram… do you have snapchat… we can be friends… we can start a streak!!” A “streak” is formed when you message a person on snapchat every day. German children have “streaks” ranging from 125- 600, with about 25 people. It really is a sight for sore eyes. I’d say that the line between social media dependence and obsession is strained here. This is when social media becomes inconvenient rather than handy.

Technology in Dortmund

Dortmund was the centre of the coal industry, but when that went into decline, the city was regenerated and is now the centre of technology and innovation. I attended German classes at “TU Dortmund University” (Technische Universität) which offers some of the most innovative technology courses in the country. Practically everyone I met was studying some type of engineering! Even the famous BVB Dortmund football club are in the vanguard of technology. The largest football stadium in Germany, with an attendance of 80,000 fans, they have stadium wide wifi coverage, employing advanced technology.

Dortmund is part of the “Ruhrgebiet” which is the centre for industry and technology

Traurige Nachrichten

p.s hope you all got the pun in my blog title!
