Apropos of nothing in particular

This week’s Welsh Political Barometer poll asked the following question:

“Which of the following do you think would make the best Conservative leader and Prime Minister if Theresa May were to stand down?”

These are the results, presented in two columns: for our entire sample, and for those who say they would vote Conservative in a general election:

Name% Whole Sample% Conservative Voters
Boris Johnson1829
Sajid Javid55
Michael Gove39
Dominic Raab38
Amber Rudd35
Esther McVey23
Rory Stewart10
Jeremy Hunt
16
Andrea Leadsom11
Penny Mordaunt10
Matt Hancock00
None of these259
Don’t Know3725

There will be lots more to say on this in the coming weeks; but if the voters are any guide – though we should recall that party leadership elections often produce unexpected outcomes – then there is a good chance that Boris Johnson will be our next Prime Minister.

We now know that the end of May will be 7th June, so more speculation, analysis, predictions ad infinitum but to what purpose, I wonder?
