COMMODIFICATION OF HIGHER EDUCATION: CHANGE OF MISSION OR A MERE RE-ORGANIZATION OF EDUCATIONAL AFFAIRS?
Supervisor: Dr. Thomas Bartlett
Supervisee: Hossein Rezaie (PoP)
“Higher education gives you the chance to study a subject you are interested in and boost your career prospects and earnings potential. If you are thinking of higher education, help and support is available” (http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/the-benefits-of-higher-education)
“UK education is all about giving you the inspiration to help you develop your skills, the freedom to be creative, and the support you need to achieve your best. Achieve an internationally recognised qualification: UK higher education qualifications are recognised and respected by employers and academics worldwide”. (http://www.educationuk.org/global/articles/why-choose-higher-education/)
These quotes, among lots of others, enjoy ubiquity on university websites acting as eye catching headlines for (inter)national students when they search for higher education degrees in the UK. The common thread running through university advertisements like these is an orientation toward market-driven values. The root of this shift of emphasis in academia, from nurturing knowledge and intellectual capacity in students to aligning academic affairs toward market, can be sought in marketization of every aspect of life since cold war during which capitalism prevailed over communism and declared that markets are the primary instruments for achieving public good.
NB: This research has been recently approved to be undertaken after an 8-month focus on the previously approved research in the aftermath of seeing the latter as a less viable option. Nonetheless, the reverent erudite audience is hereby requested to give their conducive comments, feedbacks or suggestions at the end of the presentation so that the already delayed literature review would be precipitated and finalized.
