Library services for graduating students working in Wales

Every Health Board in Wales provides a library service for staff, including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. When you start your new job, please visit the local hospital library to find out what they can offer you.  If you will be working in Cardiff and Vale UHB, you can register in the Health Library, UHW or the Archie Cochrane Library, UHL.

If you have a student Athens account, please ask your local library for a new staff account, which gives you extra resources, including the BNF.

Libraries are here to support you in your work so please contact us if we can help.

UHW Graduate Centre Opens 24/7

Where is it?

The address is Main Hospital Building, Room 2TB2 31 – which is on the second floor of the hospital building (opposite the Dental Hospital). If you approach it from the Dental Hospital, go into the main entrance, immediate left into the stairwell, up to the second floor, turn left and it is on your right. You can also take the lift to the second floor, take a right out of the lift and right again into the stairwell foyer and continue across into the corridor – Room 31 is on the right. If you approach from the Hospital Concourse, follow the signs to Heathfields Restaurant; go through Heathfields into the School of Medicine foyer.  The lift and stairwell will be on your right.

Who can use it?

Anyone enrolled on a postgraduate course at Cardiff University can use it – you will need your University identity card to use the access system; hold the card up to the reader, you’ll get a green light and you can then turn the handle.

Please use Room 31 as the main entrance to avoid disturbing students using the study space. Initially, for practical reasons, we are only granting automatic access rights to those in the School of Medicine, Dentistry, Healthcare Studies and Nursing & Midwifery. Other postgrads will be granted access rights on request – just email grad-centre@cardiff.ac.uk.

What’s in it?

The Graduate Centre is two interconnected rooms, each with a door onto the corridor. As noted above, please enter the space from Room 31.

There is a study/meeting side, with one networked computer. Laptop users can access the University network via wi fi. We have only installed one computer, based on the input of the student planning group who told us that almost everyone will bring their own laptop into the room. This side of the space will also be used for meeting and workshops, but a limit of one day per week has been agreed initially. If you wish to book the room for a postgraduate meeting [only], please contact the Graduate Centre on 029 2087 4748 (ext 74748) or email us at grad-centre@cardiff.ac.uk. No other meetings will be permitted in the first instance.

There is also a sink with hot water boiler in this room, so you can make hot drinks using your own mug and supplies. Washing up liquid and brush have been provided, so you can wash up.

The social side has sofas, chairs and coffee tables. You are permitted to bring your own food into the space but please do clear up after yourself and put all waste into the appropriate bin (recycling or other waste). There is a DVD/Blu-ray player and a Wii console. Instructions for turning on the projector and other equipment are posted inside the cabinet near the screen. There is also a freeview receiver, but it is not yet operational. We will be adding a microwave oven soon.

What if I need assistance?

There is a phone in the social room, so you can ring the Graduate Centre if you have any queries.  You can also email us at grad-centre@cardiff.ac.uk if the query is less urgent.
